sounded like a gunshot. teresa garcia is in midland city with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you know, the officials here are telling us they decided to move in that fbi hostage rescue team after the negotiations started deteriorating with that kidnapper. so they basically got that team ready and made a major distraction. what they did was throw in some flash bang devices. those give off a really blinding, bright light and a disorienting loud noise. fbi agents shook hands and patted each others' backs shortly after storming an underground bunker to save the 5-year-old held hostage for seven days. the boy named ethan has been reunited with his family at a local hospital and is said to be doing well. >> he's laughing, joking, playing, eating. the things that you would expect a normal 5 to 6-year-old young man to do. >> reporter: the suspect, 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes, is dead. officials say they made the decision to raid the bunker after dykes began pacing and holding his gun. >> at this point, fbi agents fearing the child was in imminent danger entered the bunker an

have got 33 million worth damage in the area and city and reg 81 that is a tremendous number. local officials say somewhere between 35,000 to 50,000 windows were blown out as the shock waves. it is an enormous clean up effort that the authorities are confident that they can get a hold on with some promising that schools and businesses will get back to normal by monday and by the end of the week all main repairs should be done. but again, the reason that we are talking about it here is deep in central russia, very cold this time of year and one of the -- it is exposed apartment buildings and rooms and exposed hot water pipes. so these are all serious considerations . all they indicate they will repair the thing soon, it may not be soon enough. we'll have to wait and see how that pans out. >> you know, dan, these are the first acts that we are getting from you just how populated that area was. as i said to the viewerings, they were thankful it didn't hit a heavily populated city. so many got injured. >> the city itself has 1.1 million people and so it is it a very large city in centra

than 14 inches of snow fell in wichita. only one other storm in the city's history was worse. that was more than 50 years ago. >> let's go to wichita. how are people dealing with this much snow? >> reporter: well, most schools and universities in kansas and missouri are closed today. businesses throughout the region were closed all yesterday. they opened a lot later today. and the kansas government also started a little later today, around 10:00. usually they're in earlier. but here is the warning that the kansas officials sent out to residents. this is pretty good. please clear off hoods and roofs of your vehicles before driving. of course you don't want big chunks of snow obstructing your vision, but all the roads are open and they're pretty clear today. >> we know kansas, missouri declared states of emergency. do you have a lot of folks stranded on the roads? >> reporter: there were some. the national guard patrolled about 800 miles of roads throughout kansas. they helped about 70 stranded cars. the good news is that there was zero deaths, 106 accidents, 15 injury, but peo
